" goodbye, hello. "

This post isn’t going to make much sense, mostly because the thoughts I have in my head are jumbled and raw and I just need a moment to jot them down on paper… er, tumblog. Plus I’m tired so that adds to it I guess. Don’t read please.

So to cut to the chase, I’ve been thinking about morality and theism. More specifically, how the concept of morality seems to differ between atheism and like, Christianity for instance. There was that random post a while back that stuck with me, where some guy was asked the difference between the two and he more or less replied, “a Christian will not rob a bank because God told him not to whereas an atheist will not rob a bank because it’s a dick thing to do.” I think this pretty much sums up why, after countless interactions with the community, I haven’t fully prescribed to Christianity (or just organized religion in general) just yet.

I mean, if someone tells you to do good in order to go to heaven, doesn’t that sort of nullify that good act? The fact that you need the reward of eternal glory and bliss in God’s arms as an incentive seems to make that act of goodness kind of… insincere. I just think people shouldn’t have to have other people higher up give them reasons to be a good person; they should be able to find it within themselves to treat others with respect… because doing otherwise would just be a dick thing to do*. The key difference between atheism and theism is just a matter of whose terms do we base our judgements on. Should we decide on what’s right based on God’s terms or our own or society’s? For me I guess I like to write my own set of rules based on what I believe is reasonable for the maintenance of society.

*But then again, I can only speak for myself. I’m also well aware that the compelling thing about subscribing to religion is if we don’t have a good idea of what’s considered good to begin with, as a result of being raised in an negative environment. So yeah. Moral of the story: raise your kids in a functional household and things will be fine.
